Talent is like Inventory

Is Talent analogy to Inventory relevant in the rapidly changing business dynamics of today?

I believe so, at least in the service economy i.e. people-intensive businesses.

Unlike inventory, there is a human face to the talent, however, in cold economic terms there are similarities.

Inventory sitting in the warehouse costs money. So do resources sitting on the bench i.e. on non-billable projects. Sub-optimal resource utilization!

Employable versus Deployable

A couple of years when the going was good, companies were hiring at a feverish pace to meet the demand. Companies could not hire the right skilled people (“employable”) from the schools and colleges nevertheless they hired them, put them through a 6 months training program in their multi-million dollar training centers and voila came out an employable candidate. Not any more in this tough market conditions.

- Do we have the right skills that meet the current customer requirement?
- Are we still getting lateral hires to win deals when we have 10000 people sitting on the bench?
